A Heat Pump is part of a system that transfers heat from a colder area to a hotter area. The system includes an indoor unit called an air handler and the heat pump (outdoor unit). Refrigerant absorbs and releases heat as it is circulates between the indoor and outdoor units.

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) is the ratio of the seasonal heating output in Btu divided by the seasonal power consumption in watts for a heat pump. Like SEER ratings for air conditioners, HSPF is a seasonal measure. HSPF ratings of 7 to 9 are common for air source heat pumps, while geothermal (water source) heat pumps typically have HSPF ratings greater than 10.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This number indicates how much energy a unit needs for cooling. Older units had SEER ratings of 5 or 6. New high efficiency units have ratings in the 20’s. The current minimum government SEER rating for new equipment is 13 and the minimum for Energy Star Rating is 14.

The appropriate size for a heating and air unit is determined by several factors including the size of the home, ceiling heights, the number and size of windows, insulation and several other factors. Oasis perform load calculations to determine the appropriate size of equipment needed.

Your heating and air system is a very complex system with many moving parts and electrical components. Just like your car needs routine maintenance, your system needs regular maintenance to keep it work efficiently and to help keep small problems from becoming big problems.
